ImPACT initiative helping Red Deer’s most vulnerable stay immunized

Dec 20, 2023 | 11:34 AM

A new program called ImPACT (Immunization Program Access & Care Team) is helping Red Deer’s most vulnerable stay up-to-date on their shots.

Twice monthly, public health nurses visit Turning Point ( 4611 50 Avenue) and the Red Deer Primary Care Network Street Clinic (101, 4132 50 Avenue) to hold drop-in clinics for clients to discuss immunizations and catch up on any vaccines they may need. That includes tetanus, pneumonia, COVID-19 and influenza, to name a few.

AHS says quite often, there are barriers for low-income, houseless and otherwise marginalized populations in gaining access to these immunizations.

ImPACT aims to meet clients where they are.

“We provide an assessment to identify any vaccines they may need to keep them protected, and at the same time, we’re building relationships with all of these individuals in making sure everyone has access to public health services,” says Shawna Willson, a registered nurse with the ImPACT program.

“We’re there about two to three hours at each clinic, and we’ve been seeing five or six people each time, which is great. It’s small steps, but if we can help keep these people protected and reduce any risk of developing illness or chronic disease, it’ll benefit everyone in the future.”

ImPACT began in September and will continue indefinitely.
