New eagle enclosure opens at Medicine River Wildlife Centre

Eagles have fancy new temporary digs at the Medicine River Wildlife Centre, if they need it.

Located near Spruce View, southwest of Red Deer, the wildlife centre takes in animals in need of medical care, before setting them back into the wild as good as new.

That includes raptors such as eagles, but for many years, the centre has been in need of a new raptor compound with the old one falling apart.

Part one of the overall project, for eagles, was recently completed, says Carol Kelly, executive director. Bigger owls and hawks will move into their own section before Christmas.

“We now have a huge complex to house any species of bird of prey to prepare them for their final release,” she explains. “The facility is far easier to maintain and clean and is built with construction materials that will last for years and years. Our old enclosure was built 30 years ago with mostly donated untreated wood therefore having a much shorter lifespan.”

The entire raptor compound will have nine sections under one roof, including a giant one for the eagles, and others for hawks, owls and falcons, among others.

The other sections remain under construction, and weather-permitting will be finished by early next summer.

All funding is already in place to see the project through, with the entire raptor compound costing $380,000.

“There is now tons of space for our raptors to fly in a sunny sheltered area, which is an improvement over the dark, wet, forested area of the original compound,” Kelly says of the 74,880 cubic foot space.

Five to ten eagles come through the wildlife centre annually, usually with injuries caused by vehicles, barbed wire and electrocution, in that order.

Kelly urges people to be aware when driving and to use barbless forms of wire for fencing. Cleaning up old sagging barbed wire is also a good idea.

“We are very grateful for our donors who have helped us reach this stage and who allow us to provide this recovery centre to our birds of prey,” she concludes.
