UPDATED: Red Deer woman found deceased following firearms complaint

On Nov. 24, 2023, at approximately 1:30 p.m., Red Deer RCMP responded to an apartment building for a firearms complaint, where Shaeleigh Jahner, 26, a resident of Red Deer, was found deceased. At 7:30 p.m., a suspect was arrested.

On Nov. 25, 2023, as a result of the investigation, Christopher Furgason, 32, a resident of Red Deer, was charged with manslaughter with a firearm. Furgason was brought before a justice of the peace and was remanded into custody, with his next court date set for Dec. 1, 2023, at the Alberta Court of Justice in Red Deer.

Red Deer RCMP would like to inform the public that the request to avoid the area and remain indoors has been lifted. Red Deer RCMP would like to thank the public for their cooperation. Though the matter is still under investigation, there is no longer a concern for public safety.

Mounties say an addition release is anticipated once more information becomes available.

Nov. 24 3:07 p.m. – RCMP are identifying a suspect related to the firearms complaint currently being investigated on 59 avenue. They are looking for Christopher Lee Furgason.

RCMP do believe that this incident was targeted and confirm all area schools have been let out for the day.

Students at Oriole Park School (5 Oldbury St.) were among the schools directed by RCMP to go into a shelter in place, according to an email sent to parents by Principal Lori Irvine.

“A Shelter in Place is used to direct and control movement inside the school building when it is safer to remain inside and there is no threat of violence. All students and staff were safe, and teaching and learning continued as normal,” she wrote in the email.

Irvine confirmed the Shelter in Place order was lifted before dismissal time and police remained in the area.

Furgason, 32, is described as:

  • Medium complexion
  • 6 foot 2 inches tall
  • 159 pounds
  • Long wavy black hair
  • Last seen wearing a blue jacket beige ankle height pants. He has many tattoos on his arms and hands.

Although RCMP do not believe that Furgason still possess the firearm, they say he should be considered armed and dangerous. If seen, they are advising to not approach and to call 911 immediately.

Red Deer RCMP have issued a shelter in place in the Riverside Meadows neighbourhood after receiving a firearms complaint.

They say they are are currently investigating on scene in the area of 59 Avenue between 60 Street and 60a street.

RCMP are currently looking for an armed suspect in the area and are asking residents to avoid the area, remain indoors and secure their residence.

Koinoia Christian School (6014 57 Ave.) has been placed into a lock down status as a precaution due to its proximity to the initial complaint.

RCMP are asking that photos of responding officers not be placed on social media until after the incident is over.

Additional information including a suspect description will be provided when available.
