Alberta NDP launches “Your Pension is Yours” in-person town halls

Nov 12, 2023 | 10:55 AM

Alberta’s NDP is launching a series of in-person town halls across the province in light of what they say is overwhelming public concerns over the UCP’s plan to pull the province out of the Canada Pension Plan (CPP).

“The UCP have refused to meet with people face-to-face, so we’re going to give Albertans that outlet to express their concerns,” said Heather Sweet, Alberta NDP MLA for Edmonton-Manning, who will co-host the first town hall Tuesday night in Edmonton with three fellow MLAs and Leader Rachel Notley.

“We have received thousands of emails, letters and calls from Albertans who are deeply concerned about Danielle Smith’s plan to gamble their retirement security,” adds Sweet.

“The Premier is attempting to sell this plan, filled with made-up numbers and a laundry list of unknowns, while she won’t even ask Albertans the simple question — ‘do you want to leave the CPP?’

“What’s worse, Smith’s so-called consultation process doesn’t include any in-person opportunities and has been designed with predetermined outcomes.”

The first in-person consultation hosted by the Alberta NDP will be in Edmonton on Tuesday, Nov. 14, with a second confirmed date in Calgary on November 29. In-person consultations will also be announced in Red Deer, Lethbridge, and Drumheller and elsewhere in the days ahead, say party officials.

The NDP says the UCP has refused to do in-person consultations, instead hosting telephone town halls. On Thursday night, those town halls got particularly tense, suggests the Opposition, as Jim Dinning, who has been helping steer the UCP’s campaign, began yelling at people calling out what the NDP says are lies being spread by the government.

“Not only is their consultation a complete sham, but now everyday Albertans trying to expose the UCP’s scheme to gamble away CPP are being yelled at,” Sweet said. “That is completely unacceptable.

“I assure Albertans attending our town halls that we will actually listen, instead of yelling at the people we’ve been elected to represent.

Albertans planning to attend the Edmonton and Calgary town halls are encouraged to pre-register here: https://www.albertasfuture.ca/event-registration/cpp-townhall2. NDP officials say more dates will be made available on the same webpage soon.

The Opposition says Albertans can also have their say by filling out a brief survey on pensions here: https://www.albertasfuture.ca/event-registration/pension-survey.
