Rebels pick up second pre-season win over Hitmen

For the second time this pre-season, the Red Deer Rebels bested the Calgary Hitmen on Friday night.

At the Peavey Mart Centrium in Red Deer, the Rebels scored a late game-winner to skate away on top 3-2.

This was the Rebels’ third of four exhibition games ahead of dropping the puck on the regular season Sept. 22 at home to Edmonton.

They’ll close out the pre-season Saturday night at Lethbridge after winning game one 5-4 over Calgary, and losing their second 4-3 to Edmonton.

Scoring summary

It took just 65 seconds for Red Deer to break the ice as Ollie Josephson (1st) made it 1-0.

But just 33 seconds later, Calgary equalized thanks to a goal from Matteo Denis (2nd).

Things quieted down until there was just 1:01 remaining in the first, which is when Quentin Bourne (3rd) regained the lead for Red Deer to take the home side to the intermission up 2-1.

Onto the third where Ethan Moore (1st) scored shorthanded at the 11:06 mark to knot things at two goals apiece.

Then, with 3:34 to go in regulation, Samuel Drancak (2nd) potted the game-winner for the Rebels.

Red Deer outshot Calgary 36-33, while the Rebels went 0/5 on the power play, and Calgary went 0/7.

Between the pipes, Chase Wutzke stopped 31 pucks in the win, while the Hitmen’s Ethan Buenaventura made 33 saves before being pulled late for the extra attacker.

The Rebels close out the pre-season Saturday night in Lethbridge.
