Robbery charge withdrawn against Ponoka man, still faces trial in alleged break-and-enter

A man charged in an alleged Ponoka robbery two years ago has had his robbery charge withdrawn.

Daryl Huff, 36, of Ponoka, had his charge withdrawn on July 10, 2026. However, he is still scheduled for trial in Wetaskiwin Court of Justice on Oct. 23, 2026, where he faces one count of house breaking with intent, in a separate incident earlier this year.

According to the Alberta Crown Prosecution Service (ACPS), the Crown prosecutor has an ongoing obligation to review all available admissible evidence to ensure the matter continues to meet the standard for prosecution.

“In this file,” reads a statement from the ACPS. “The Crown prosecutor determined there was insufficient evidence to proceed to trial and as such, the matter was withdrawn on July 10, 2026.”

It was on Sept. 20, 2024, shortly after 6:00 p.m., when Ponoka RCMP responded to a report of a robbery at a local business in downtown Ponoka.

According to police, the victim told investigators that a man had entered the business armed with a knife and demanded money from the cash register.

The suspect had then left the scene, and officers were unable to locate the individual.

Mounties say the investigation unveiled evidence that was sent for DNA analysis, which led to an identification match. As a result, an arrest warrant was issued for the suspect.

Before police found the suspect, on May 17, 2026, shortly after 6 a.m., the same male suspect was reported to have allegedly broken into a residence in Ponoka while the homeowner was inside.

RCMP say after a brief confrontation, the suspect fled the residence.

Seven days later, Ponoka RCMP members located the man and arrested him while they were conducting patrols.

Daryl Huff was subsequently charged with robbery and break-and-enter.
