Red Deer man sentenced in Rocky armed robbery

Upon arrival, Mounties were advised that an employee had confronted a male who was blatantly attempting to steal items from the store. When confronted by the employee, the suspect produced a firearm from his waistband and pointed it at the victim.

Police say the suspect then ran from the store accompanied by a female who had entered the store with him. Upon reviewing surveillance, RCMP identified both suspects who were known to police.

With the cooperation of several citizens of Rocky Mountain House and the assistance of an RCMP Police Service Dog, officers were able to track the suspects where they were subsequently arrested.

Follow up investigation led police to be able to track the suspect’s path after they had departed the store and recover clothing worn at the time of the offence and the firearm used in the robbery.

The second person charged, Nycole Martin, 24, also of Red Deer, was sentenced in Rocky Mountain House provincial court on Dec. 21, 2022, and given a suspended sentence and 12 months of probation.

Martin was convicted on one count of theft under $5000. Counts of possession of property under $5000, and fail to comply with undertaking conditions were withdrawn.

Martin’s suspended sentence means if she does not break the law during her probationary period and fulfills the particular conditions of her probation, the sentence may be considered fulfilled. However, if she commits another offence or breaks the terms of her probation, the court can order the sentence to be served, in addition to any sentence for the new offence.
