Red Deer artist headed to France for exclusive residency

A local artist will be spending some time further mastering her craft in France starting later this summer.

Emily Promise Allison is the latest winner of the Canadian Master Artist Residency Award, offered by the La Napoule Art Foundation (France) and Fondation David R. Graham (Canada). This means that from September to November, she’ll be put up at the Chateau de La Napoule in the country’s south.

The award is given out once every two years, and includes a private living space and artist studio, separate from other simultaneous group residencies.

“Art is the most joyful way I can communicate my purest self. There is a subtle division between my life and my art. Being an artist is a mentality that is built into the way I see the world,” says Emily.

“While in France, I will be developing a new photographic series and experimental film based on the enchanting qualities of material transformation. Using natural and artificial matter, local ephemera, and chemical reactions, I will develop a hyper-specialized environment of images and absurd sculptural scenarios. I will be capturing moments of controlled chaos as I record the playful humour of this new and exciting work; generating passageways into realms of surreal curiosity and human desire.”

Emily, 35, says that after her residency is complete, the way her creations will exist is in photography she can take where she wanders.

The nature of her artwork is ephemeral, or that it lasts for a short time and/or must be presented in a very customized space where she can create an immersive experience.

“My work thrives on experimentation and a refinement of the unknown, so I will immediately begin working with my camera in the studio to make discoveries. I will be creating time-sensitive sculptures that are chemically volatile and require me to have perfect timing behind my camera. I’ll be arranging small-scale explosions within tableau vivants,” Emily continues, describing herself as a conceptual artist who uses photography and performance to create images that embrace surreal, metaphysical, and dreamlike qualities

“The purpose of my work is to activate curiosity, stimulate a sense of wonder, and enable a collapse of status and expectation concerning theoretical knowledge versus lived experience. I regard the imagination as a fundamental sense that allows us to find or create magic within systems regulated by logic; celebrating the strange nature of existence and the absurdity of life.”

Emily’s work has appeared in many spaces, including in Oslo, Norway, Dresden, Germany, Glasgow, Scotland, and New Orleans, U.S.A.
