High-risk offender from Red Deer released from custody in Calgary

A high-risk offender who used to live in Red Deer was released from prison on Tuesday, according to the Calgary Police Service (CPS).

CPS says they released the public information and warning in the interest of public safety.

Daniel Christopher Leonard, 45, is being released to the Calgary community after serving a 28-month sentence for sexual assault.

He is described as 5’11” tall, 195 pounds, with brown eyes and is bald.

Calgary Police confirmed to rdnewsNOW that Leonard is currently living in Calgary, though could not confirm if that location is mandated for him.

Leonard has multiple convictions for sexual assault, indecent acts and failing to comply with probation that have resulted in custodial sentences. The majority of his crimes have occurred in Red Deer, Edmonton and Calgary, and targeted women that were unknown to him.

The Red Deer RCMP issued a similar warning to the public in 2019 when he was last released from provincial custody. He served for public indecency that took place in the local Superstore parking lot.

In February 2018, he was sentenced for a 2016 sexual assault in the downtown Red Deer area. He was also convicted for sexual assaults on women near the University of Alberta in Edmonton in 2014 and served more than two years in a U.S. prison for making thousands of harassing phone calls to women while he was working at a water park in Washington State.

CPS state Leonard will be closely monitored by the Calgary Police Service High Risk Offender Program.

The Calgary Police Service say they are issuing this information and warning after careful deliberation and consideration of all related issues, including privacy concerns, in the belief that it is clearly in the public interest to inform the members of the community of the release of Leonard.

They advise that the intent of the process is to enable members of the public to take suitable precautionary measures and not to embark on any form of vigilante action.
