Canada Day celebrations are happening across central Alberta for you and all your buds

July 1 falls on the weekend this year and communities in central Alberta are ready to celebrate Canada Day with an abundance of local festivities.

RED DEER

The Red Deer Cultural Heritage Society is back with their 54th annual Canada Day at Bower Ponds (4707 Fountain Dr.).

From 11 a.m. – 9:30 p.m., a variety of artists, from dancers to musicians, will be performing on stage in a myriad of genres. Food and family activities will also be available.

The Society will host a Citizenship Ceremony at 2 p.m. and fireworks at 11 p.m.

Admission is free, however pets will not be allowed and no parking will be available at Bower Ponds. Residents are being asked to walk, cycle, or use the Park n’ Ride service for one dollar from Sorensen Station where parking will be free for the day.

SYLVAN LAKE

Starting at 11 a.m., residents from the Town of Sylvan Lake can join Indigenous knowledge keeper Clare Butterfly for tea and sharing of history under her handcrafted tipi.

Guests can also enjoy an energetic and colorful performance by Spandy Andy by the Lakefront or the day race by the local Sailing Club. Car enthusiasts can visit the Show and Shine, kids can wear red with pride with face painting, and many more activities.

The night will end with a firework show at 10:30 p.m.

BLACKFALDS

The Town of Blackfalds is hosting a Canada Day party at the Tayles Water Pray Park (5018 Waghorn St.) from 1-3 p.m. with face painting, balloon animals, and refreshments while jamming to some music from Canadian artists.

LACOMBE

The City of Lacombe has quite a few activities for the special day.

The Lacombe Museum is inviting the community from 10 a.m. to discover stories that helped shape the country with interactive programs where they can pan for gold, make traditional dip-candles, experience heritage blacksmithing or register for a guided walking tour downtown. A cake will also be served at the Blacksmith Shop Museum (5020 49 St.).

At 2:30 p.m., a Canada Day Market will be held at the Lacombe Gary Moe Sportsplex (5210 54 Ave.) where there will also be games, food trucks, and family-friendly activities.

In the evening, live music performances will be available at Cranna Lake before fireworks at 11 p.m.

PENHOLD

Residents can join the Town of Penhold bright and early at 8:30 a.m. for a Pancake Breakfast at the Penhold Youth Club in the Multiplex.

At the Lincoln Street Recreation Centre (144 Lincoln St.), families can enjoy a circus station, face painting, outdoor games, and glitter tattoos.

INNISFAIL

The Town of Innisfail is starting it’s Canada Day celebrations on Friday, June 30 with their annual fireworks display beginning just after dusk on the west side of the Arena (5804 42 St.).

On Saturday, the morning will begin with a free pancake breakfast and entertainment at the Innisfail Historical Village (5139 42 St.).

At 4 p.m., celebrations will continue at Centennial Park (5303 50 St.) until 11 p.m., where families can take pictures at the photo booth and frame craft section, play in the inflatable obstacle course, bouncy house and yard games. The Innisfail Lions Club will be hosting a beer garden and barbeque, alongside food trucks and live musical performances.

PONOKA

The Town of Ponoka is already in party mode as they have been hosting the Ponoka Stampede since Monday.

Running until July 2, the Town is partnering again with the Stampede and Exhibition Association to host the Canada Day fireworks display on July 1 at the Stampede grounds (5616 39 Ave.) at 10:45 p.m.

OLDS

The Town of Olds is kicking off its celebration with fireworks Friday night at 11 p.m. at the Rotary Athletic Park (3901 70 Ave.)

On Saturday, a parade will be held starting at 10 a.m. followed by a variety of live performances on stage at Centennial Park (5037 53 St.) from the Red Deer Aboriginal Dance Troupe, a magic show and more.

Other activities in the park include games with prizes, sparkle tattoos, bouncy houses, local vendors, free hot dogs, cookies and other refreshments.

STETTLER

The Stettler Town & Country Museum will be celebrating with wagon rides, children’s games, an artisans market, and cake, all free for the whole family. They’ll begin the day with an $8 pancake breakfast from 9-11 a.m.

Following a historical tour and scavenger hunt, guests can enjoy agricultural demonstrations and activities like a bouncy castle, battle axes, blow up obstacle course, ball pit, face painting, free hot dogs and more at West Stettler Park gazebo, south of Highway 12 between 62 St. and 70 St. There will also be a craft station, balloon animals and a photo booth.

Cupcakes will be available at 7 p.m. with some live outdoor entertainment and fireworks to end the evening at dusk.

ROCKY MOUNTAIN HOUSE

The Town of Rocky Mountain House’s National Historic Site (Site 127 Comp 6 RR4) will kick off at noon with cultural performances, followed by live music beginning at 6 p.m.

Events throughout the day include a car show, heli rides, axe throwing, face painting, wagon rides, a visit from a few princesses, toonie carnival, and various food vendors.

The evening will wrap up at 11:30 p.m. with fireworks.

SUNDRE

The Town will be hosting a car show on Canada Day at Pioneer Village (211 1 Ave SW), with registration open from 8– 10 a.m. and awards handed out at 1:30 p.m.

At the Village, the Museum Gallery and World of Wildlife will be accepting donations as admission.

Alongside a flag raising ceremony, various markets will be open as town council hosts a free barbeque with cake during live entertainment.
