Temperature records broken throughout central Alberta on Thursday

A number of temperature records were set throughout many parts of the province on Thursday, including some in the central Alberta region.

According to Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), the Red Deer area set a new record high for June 8 of 30.4 degrees Celsius, beating the old record of 30.2 degrees Celsius set in 1977. Records in this area have been kept since 1904.

Elsewhere, the Lacombe area set a new record high for June 8 of 31.0 degrees Celsius, beating the old record of 30.0 degrees Celsius, set in 1930. Records in this area have been kept since 1907.

The Rocky Mountain House area set a new record high for June 8 of 29.8 degrees Celsius, beating the old record of 28.3 degrees Celsius set in 1919. Records in this area have been kept since 1915.

The Nordegg area set a new record high for June 8 of 28.3 degrees Celsius, surpassing the previous record of 27.8 degrees Celsius set in 1948. Records in this area have been kept since 1915.

The Sundre area set a new record high for June 8 of 30.2 degrees Celsius, surpassing the previous record of 27.5 degrees Celsius set in 2016. Records in this area have been kept since 1993.

The Breton area also set a new record high for June 8 of 29.0 degrees Celsius, beating the old record of 25.1 degrees Celsius set in 2017. Records in this area have been kept since 1939.

A Heat Warning remains in place for much of Alberta on Friday, June 9, 2023, with most of the province also under fire bans, restrictions or advisories.
