City of Lacombe wins provincial award for repurposing former lagoons
The City of Lacombe has been given a provincial award for repurposing their decommissioned former lagoon cells in an innovative way.
The City received the 2023 Economic Developers Alberta (EDA) Community Award of Excellence in the category of Economic Development Renewal for Small Community/Region.
The award category recognizes communities that take underutilized municipal assets and implement innovative strategies to re-establish them as pillars of economic strength for the community.
The City was recognized for their partnership with local oil and gad company Vesta Energy Ltd. on the project. Lagoon cells, also known as waste stabilization ponds, are in-ground earth basins used to treat wastewater with natural processes involving algae and other bacteria.
