70-75 per cent pre-pandemic levels

City says Red Deer Transit ridership on the rise

May 2, 2023 | 11:03 AM

According to City administration, Red Deer Transit ridership is trending upward for conventional and action buses.

A report was shared with city council at their regular meeting on Monday stating that in the first quarter of 2023, rates were 70 – 75 per cent of their pre-pandemic numbers.

At the 2023-2024 Budget deliberations, council identified challenges for Transit ridership and revenue, and asked administration to come back with a report outlining operational challenges as a result of the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.

City officials said that provincial and federal grants supported Transit operations throughout the pandemic; however, these grants are no longer available to offset reduced revenues from lowered ridership.

“This news is promising, and we hope it continues,” said Jeremy Bouw, the City’s Transit & Fleet Services Manager. “We are working to better understand what the community requires for public transit service and are shifting our focus to the future of transit and its sustainability.”

The City says that Red Deer Transit continues to monitor demand for transit service and works with large employers in the area, like Olymel and Parkland Mall, to ensure nimble and flexible service can be provided to meet their employee needs. Administration said they plan to bring an updated situational assessment of transit operations back to council in the fall of 2023.

Transit schedules are available on the City’s website and the MyBus app. Riders can contact the Transit Customer Service team at 403-342-8225 or transit@reddeer.ca for help planning their routes.
