Special weather statement issued for Red Deer and area

A special weather statement has been issued for Red Deer and area.

According to Environment and Climate Change Canada, conditions are favourable for the development of funnel clouds today. These conditions are expected to last until early this evening.

Officials say these types of funnel clouds are generated by weak rotation under rapidly growing clouds or weak thunderstorms. This weak rotation is normally not a danger near the ground but there is a chance it could intensify and become a weak landspout tornado.

If conditions become more favourable, watches and warnings will be issued by Environment Canada.
