a multi-pronged idea

Filmmaker creates documentary about old Michener lands

A Red Deer woman has helmed a new film as part of Telus STORYHIVE’s Game Changers documentary edition.

Heidy Panameño’s film, entitled Outside This Box, explores a collective approach to healing and sustainably utilizing resource land on the old Michener Hill hospital grounds.

Panameño says the film outlines possible solutions to challenges with that land, and includes the voices of citizens, ultimately proposing that a multi-use campus be constructed.

The campus would be home to a year-round greenhouse, a cultural village, a science centre, and hotel, among other things the film highlights.

“The idea behind this documentary is to bring people to the table who can contribute to this vision, including private investors,” explains Panameño.

“All the layers of government can benefit from investing in such a project; this includes sustainable social solutions, good political will, economic opportunities and growth for citizens, businesses and communities. Including every kind of community member in the planning and visioning is a better way of doing community because you are looking at social as well as economic gains.”

The film, which was made possible through a $20,000 STORYHIVE grant, will premiere at 3 p.m. on May 27 at Carnival Cinemas.

Free tickets are available on eventbrite.

STORYHIVE projects are also distributed for free on TELUS Optik™ TV On Demand and online. For more information, visit storyhive.com.
