Rebels under siege in game five as series shifts back to Red Deer

Apr 21, 2023 | 9:50 PM

With a second chance to eliminate the Saskatoon Blades Friday night, the Red Deer Rebels came up short, losing 6-3 at the Sask Tel Centre.

The result comes two days after the Blades found life in the series, winning game four in Red Deer to take it back to their home barn. The Rebels ran through the Blades prior to that, taking games one through three with confidence.

What this all means of course is that the series now shifts back to Red Deer for game six on Sunday, with the Rebels getting another kick at the can to put the Blades to bed.

Scoring summary

For Saskatoon, game five marked the first time in the series they scored any first period goals, and they got three.

But this one was far from a cakewalk early on, with teams trading offense.

At 5:39 of the first, Tanner Molendyk (2nd) got the Blades on the board.

Kai Uchacz (7th) equalized for the Rebels at 11:08, but Egor Sidorov (6th) put the Blades back up by one on the power play at 11:59.

Uchacz (8th) scored again at 16:58, but before the opening frame was out, Sidorov (7th) called his bet and raised, scoring another power play marker at 18:03.

At this point, Kyle Kelsey was relieved of his duties in the Rebels’ net, allowing three goals on seven shots, and it was 3-2 after 20 minutes.

In the middle stanza, Red Deer found the tying goal early, when Ollie Josephson (2nd) picked up the trash in front just 88 seconds in.

The period continued on scoreless until late, which is when Aidan De La Gorgendiere (2nd) tallied with just 25 seconds remaining. The goal was also De La Gordendiere’s third point of the night, and the Blades’ third power play goal of the evening.

In the third, when they needed a big period, things did not go the Rebels’ way.

At 5:41, Jayden Wiens (6th) scored to make it 5-3, then Molendyk (3rd) got his second of the night at 12:34 for a commanding 6-3 lead.

And that is how the night ended.

In relief, Chase Coward stopped 21 of 24 shots faced in 41:57 of game time, his first of the 2023 WHL Playoffs for the Rebels. Coward hadn’t seen the net since a regular season game against Lethbridge on March 24.

Ethan Chadwick got the start for Saskatoon, stopping 14 of 17 in his eighth appearance out of 12 games the Blades have played this post season.
