Round 2, Game 1: Rebels steal home-ice advantage with series-opening win over Blades

Apr 14, 2023 | 9:49 PM

The second round of the WHL playoffs is officially a go, as the Red Deer Rebels topped the Saskatoon Blades in game one Friday night by a score of 3-1.

If their first post-season tilt of 2023 is any indication, the Rebels were correct in their pre-series assessment that it would be a tight one.

RD. 2 PREVIEW: Rebels refuse underdog label ahead of second round series versus Blades

Not only was scoring low, so were shots; Red Deer was outshot by their opponent a timid 24-20; it was only 14-13 Rebels through two.

Scoring summary

Goals took a hot minute to arrive, with both teams failing to score on their lone power plays in the first.

At 4:28 of the second, Jhett Larson (2nd) put the Rebels ahead. Christoffer Sedoff and Jayden Grubbe assisted, and it remained 1-0 through 40 minutes.

For Grubbe, it was his 11th point of the playoffs, which leads the Rebels, and is tied for second among players still active in the post-season.

After once again trading man advantages in the second, they did so for a third time in the final frame, but there was nothing doing.

But at 14:19, Red Deer’s Jace Isley (1st) did double the lead with an unassisted tally, and the Rebels were looking large and in charge with just over five minutes remaining.

Then at 18:08, and goaltender Austin Elliot on the bench for the extra attacker, the Blades drew within one.

Jake Chiasson (3rd) beat Kyle Kelsey on a rebound at the back door, and all of a sudden, it was a one-goal game with just 112 seconds on the clock.

Saskatoon once again got the goalie out of the net, but this time, the visitors made them pay with four seconds left; the Finnish Sedoff (3rd) drifting it into the yawning cage.

Kelsey made 23 saves in the win, and Elliot stopped 17 for the Blades.

In five combined 2022-23 regular season and playoff games, this is the second time the Rebels have beat the Blades.
