Smoke alarms and escape plan save family after house fire Tuesday

Apr 12, 2023 | 10:14 AM

Red Deer Emergency Services responded to yet another house fire late Tuesday night.

It was about 11:30 p.m. when a call came in about a fire at 6315 61 Avenue in Highland Green.

Acting Deputy Chief Matt White says four occupants were home at the time, including one adult, two toddlers and an infant. All four, plus a dog, got out safe.

“Having working smoke alarms and an escape plan saved these people’s lives,” says White.

“Crews contained the fire to the house of origin, although there is extensive damage. The occupants will be displaced for some time, but are staying with family.”

Investigators are now on scene working to determine the cause.

As rdnewsNOW reported yesterday, there’s been a rash of house fires over the last few days.

White says the recent string is a coincidence, but there are some valuable lessons to go along with that.

“This run we’ve had is super unusual, so we’d ask people to please check their smoke alarms and have an escape plan like this family did,” he says. “Also, be careful disposing of smoking materials, and be careful using portable heating devices.”

Three engines, a ladder, a rescue truck, a platoon chief, one ambulance, and 25 fire fighters responded to the Highland Green fire on Tuesday night.

No members of RDES have been injured in the recent fires.
