The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) continues to investigate an officer-involved shooting in Red Deer on March 12.

It was 11:16 a.m., ASIRT notes, when RCMP received a 911 call alleging a car-jacking and the presence of a firearm at the north Red Deer Walmart.

The 911 call came from a cell phone registered to an adult male, who was the subject of a missing persons report in the Calgary area.

Upon arrival near Walmart, RCMP located an unoccupied vehicle associated to the 911 caller. They searched the area around Walmart with a drone, but could not located the caller.

At 2:17 p.m., two RCMP officers located the person walking westbound on 67 Street.

ASIRT does not specify, but the original RCMP release on March 13 indicated that the person was located in the vicinity Garden Heights, possibly on or near Carleton Avenue, located about a 30-minute walk east.

ASIRT goes on the say that oficers got out of their vehicle, approaching the person, and the ensuing interaction was captured on the RCMP vehicle’s recording device.

The person would not identify himself, nor follow directions given by officers, ASIRT says. The person is said to have then ran at the officers, and produced an item which resembled a firearm out of his jacket pocket, then allegedly pointing it at the officers. One officer then fired his firearm and the other fired a non-lethal projectile.

The person was hit with rounds from the firearm and fell to the ground. He received treatment and was then airlifted to a Calgary hospital, where he remains.

As seen above, what appears to be some type of handgun, was found at the scene of the confrontation, ASIRT shares.

ASIRT’s investigation will examine the use of force by the officer. No additional information will be released.

ASIRT says its mandate is to effectively, independently and objectively investigate incidents involving Alberta’s police that have resulted in serious injury or death to any person, as well as serious or sensitive allegations of police misconduct.
