West Park Gardens redevelopment moving to second phase

The West Park Gardens redevelopment project is moving right along.

The West Park Community Association says in a release that phase one is now complete.

Located on 58 Avenue just south of the West Park Shopping Centre, the gardens are taking on a whole new life.

Phase one included:

• Gazebo, serving as a shelter and as a stage for the proposed amphitheatre​
• Ramp accessibility
• Benches
• BBQ pad
• Landscaping around gazebo, including trees and shrubs

“Once developed, West Park Gardens will be a place where families and neighbours will be able to gather for community events, meet with family and friends, or enjoy the trails,” the association says.

“Thanks in part to generous donors in the neighbourhood, we were able to reach our funding goal, and phase one of the development was completed in January.”

Phase one’s budget was $70,000; $24,000 was raised locally, $11,000 came from the association itself, and the province provided $35,000 through a CFEP grant.

Phase two is slated to be complete this fall, and will include:

• Central, paved trail; periphery trails
• New trees
• Natural amphitheatre
• Park benches & picnic tables
• Food forest (public orchard)
• Enhanced sledding hill
• Games node (outdoor ping pong, chess tables)

The second phase has a fundraising goal of $28,000.

The association’s AGM is happening at 7 p.m. on March 20 at the Activity Centre/Skate Shack (3811 57 Ave).
