Penhold moving forward with major trail upgrades

Penhold is having a major facelift done to its trail system.

The Active Transportation Project, which will upgrade or add about seven kilometres of trails, will start and finish later this year, says Mayor Mike Yargeau.

New ones will be nearby the multiplex and in the south end, while other gravel trails around town will be paved.

The project is funded with $915,077 from the federal government and $610,000 from the Town.

Yargeau explains that work will include connectivity and expansion of trails, including a footbridge, lighting, boat dock, and aeration for the ponds.

“Any time we ask our residents what they want to see, trails and outdoor recreation spaces are always, by far, number one, so we made a commitment a few years ago saying we would step up our game,” says Yargeau about the new trails. “These kinds of projects help attract new residents and businesses because then people know they’ll be here, and be happy and healthy.”

The boat dock will allow for kayaks and canoes to go out onto the ponds, which Yargeau notes are up to 25 feet deep.

Yargeau adds that a separate gazebo and washroom project is being done near the multiplex, and a replacement school is slated to be put in.

“In a few years, it’ll look like a brand new area.”

The federal funding which made this project ultimately possible was made available to the Town in early January.
