Mar 5, 2023 | 12:00 PM

The 8th annual CommUnity Power of One event returns to Red Deer this month.

The fixture on the Red Deer calendar goes from 9-4 on March 18 in conjunction with the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

It will be held at Red Deer Polytechnic’s Cenovus Learning Common (Four Centres Building), and is free to attend.

“The goal of the CommUnity Power of One Event is to build awareness and understanding around the history and experiences people have had with racial discrimination, and to create more harmony between different ethnicities, and cultures,” says Jan Underwood, event spokesperson.

“We aim to leave the audience with inspiration, skills, and tools to take action to make more positive change around racial issues, and to rebuild relationships with more intentionality.”

This year’s theme is Remember, Reimagine and Rebuild.

Keynote speakers are Dr. Lisa Tink and Chantal Chagnon, and other sessions will include, but are not limited to:

-Barriers and Challenges Facing the North and South Sudanese Community

-Is it the Time of the 8th fire? Remember. Reimagine. Rebuild.

-Calling the Circle – Ancient Technology in Post-Modern Time

“We believe that the CommUnity Power of One Event has had great impact in the community for the past seven years, motivated attendees to be more welcoming and inclusive, been a catalyst for research, and contributed to the creation of innovative anti-racist projects and initiatives, led by community members and organizations,” adds Underwood.

Partner agencies and organizations include Care for Newcomers, Catholic Social Services – Settlement, Lifelong Learning Council of Red Deer, RCMP, Red Deer Cultural Heritage Society, Red Deer Polytechnic, Red Deer Public Library, the Francophonie Albertaine Plurielle, and The City of Red Deer.

In previous years, this event attracted 200-500 participants.
