Rebels dent Tigers’ playoff hopes with huge special teams performance

Feb 18, 2023 | 9:42 PM

The Red Deer Rebels got back in the win column Saturday night with a 5-4 come from behind victory over the Medicine Hat Tigers.

This after the Rebels gave up seven in a three-goal loss Friday to Kamloops.

For the Rebels and Tigers, this was the fifth of six meetings this season. Coming in, Red Deer held the advantage at 3-0-0-1, while the Tigers had a record of 1-3-0-0.

The Tigers also entered the contest fighting for their playoff lives; with 16 games to go for the visitors, they sat just outside the Eastern playoff window, one point behind Swift Current, Calgary and Regina.

Red Deer, meantime, came in comfy atop the division with a healthy 10 point gap over Lethbridge and 15 games remaining in the regular season.

Scoring summary

Red Deer got on the board first in this one, Hunter Mayo (15th) scoring on the Rebels’ 7th-ranked (6th on the road) power play at 10:14.

It was just 1-0 after 20 minutes.

In the second, the hometown Tigers came alive.

First at 4:23, Shane Smith (17th) scored to equalize.

Then just 2:10 later, at 6:33, Cayden Lindstrom (15th) scored himself a power play goal. Lindstrom was the one in the box when Mayo put the Rebels ahead in the first.

The hits kept coming as Medicine Hat scored once again, this time Brendan Lee (22nd) at 9:58 of the second, and it was suddenly 3-1.

Scoring, however, was far from over.

At 14:52, Rebels leading scorer Kai Uchacz (42nd) made it 3-2 Med Hat, also getting Red Deer’s second man advantage marker of the night.

Less than two minutes later, at 16:46, Mats Lindgren (8th) tied things up at three, yet again on the power play — and that’s how the second period ended.

In the third, Red Deer found a way to forge ahead early, with Frantisek Formanek (10th) scoring at 1:18 for the 4-3 lead, and for the fourth time on the night, it came on the power play.

But Medicine Hat had an answer as Smith (18th) got his second of the night, on the man advantage as well, at 3:37 for the 4-4 tie.

And they headed to overtime, where who else but Kai Uchacz (43rd) got the only even strength goal of the night for Red Deer at 3:34 for the big two points.
