It has been a theme of winning for Queens Basketball since the end of November. With their two wins against an always-tough SAIT Trojans team, they are now 10-6 which places them tied for second place with the Lethbridge College Kodiaks. This is coming from a team who were 3-6 nearing the end of the first half of the season but have won their last seven games to make a huge jump to the top of the standings. They were able to defeat the Trojans 74-52 at home and would follow that up with a 68-57 win in Calgary.

Off the bench, Sadie Jeffries (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) was named the player of the game on Friday night with 13 points and five rebounds. On Saturday night, local-native Peighton Melton was awarded the honour with 10 points and an outstanding 20 rebounds.

Kings (9-7) vs SAIT Trojans (8-7)

It was a much different story for the Kings Basketball team as they were able to extend their winning streak to six with an 85-75 victory over the SAIT Trojans on Friday night at home. But with one second left to go in the fourth quarter, a Trojans guard hit a clutch three-pointer to give the Kings an 84-83 loss. They will look to get back to their winning ways on Friday, February 3 as they host the Olds College Broncos at 8 p.m.

Post Dennis Ennis (Open Studies) was awarded the player of the game on Friday night with a double-double, and Saturday night, Eduardo Crespo (Academic Upgrading) was awarded the honor with another 28-point performance.

Hockey

Queens (8-4) vs Olds College Broncos (3-9)

Saturday, January 28 at 7 p.m. at Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

Queens Hockey had a tough start to their week as they got outworked in Olds and fell to the Broncos 4-2 on Thursday. However, after a one-day break, the Queens team was back at it and got some revenge. They were able to score seven goals on Olds with six different players scoring enroute to a 7-1 victory.

Forward Natalie Buttle (Bachelor of Kinesiology) scored two goals and was named the player of the game for Saturday night. Rookie Tasha Barsby (Bachelor of Science) hit a milestone last night as she scored her first-ever Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) goal. The other goal scorers were defense Kassy Gaudette, defense Kyla Hansel, forward Brenna Reid, and forward Madison Sansom.

Portage College Voyageurs (3-15-1) at Kings (12-6-1)

Friday, January 27 at 7 p.m.
Saturday, January 28 at 1 p.m.

The Kings finally ended their small drought on home ice with back-to-back wins in the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre. Heading into this past weekend, the Kings lost two straight games on home ice. They would end that on Friday with a commanding 6-3 victory over the Voyageurs that featured a hat trick from forward Nolan Doell (Bachelor of Education), a perfect 4/4 on the powerplay, and a shorthanded goal. Doell was named the player of the game.

With a tight turnaround for a Saturday afternoon game, the Kings knew they had to come out of the gate fast and aggressively. It was a close game for most of it as it was 2-1 going into the third period but with an early goal from forward Ryland McNinch and a late powerplay marker from forward Jacob Wozney (Bachelor of Education), the Kings pushed through for a 4-1 victory. McNinch was named the player of the game with two goals, and the other goal scorer was forward Dylan Esau (Business Diploma).

Volleyball

Queens (8-7) vs SAIT Trojans (8-7)

The Queens weekend did not start the way they hoped as they would fall 3-1 in Calgary to the SAIT Trojans. It did not look that way though as the Queens managed to win the first set 25-11. However, from there they would fall in the next three sets to lose the match. Right-side Sydney Rix was named the player of the match with five kills, seven digs, and three blocks.

The Queens managed to turn things around though on Saturday night and get some revenge with a 3-1 match win over the Trojans inside their home gym. They were able to come strong in the first set again but had to battle for the second set victory. They would fall in the third set but managed to come back with their best set of the match to take it 25-17 and defeat the Trojans 3-1. Middle-blocker Autumn Roos (Open Studies) was named the Queens player of the game with 10 kills and two blocks. RDP Athletics gave a shout-out to outside-hitter Lauren Junck (Bachelor of Psychology) as she had three straight aces in the fourth set and a total of 18 kills in the match.

Kings (14-1) vs SAIT Trojans (4-11)

Earlier, it was mentioned that the Queens Basketball squad had an ongoing theme but so do the Kings Volleyball team as they are now riding a 13-match victory.

Head Coach Aaron Schulha explained after Saturday night’s match there is still room for improvement, but says he sure likes what he is seeing at this time of the year.

The Kings went 6-0 this weekend against the SAIT Trojans but after making quick work of the Calgary team on Friday night, they had to battle in the first two sets. The Trojans made a few changes in their lineup on Saturday night and made it quite difficult for the Kings in the opening two sets. However, things turned around in the third game and they came out to play traditional Kings Volleyball. RDP managed to jump out to a 17-7 lead in the third set and took the match from there with a final score of 25-15. On both nights outside-hitter Colby Nemeth (Bachelor of Commerce) was named the player of the match with a total of 17 kills, nine aces, and six digs.
