Shandro takes the stand at his law society hearing

Jan 26, 2023 | 9:07 AM

CALGARY – Alberta’s justice minister has defended the actions that led to complaints against him to the Law Society of Alberta, saying he was protecting his wife and family.

Tyler Shandro, who was health minister in 2020, took the stand at a law society hearing Wednesday to face complaints that he committed professional misconduct on three separate occasions.

Shandro told the hearing that he and his wife received close to a thousand threats between December of 2019 and March of 2020, including death threats and sexual violence.

During that time the United Conservative Party government was embroiled in rocky negotiations with health-care unions and the Alberta Medical Association.

Shandro says when a former client and supporter sent a note to his wife at her health insurance agency he saw it as a threat and warned her to address future correspondence to him.

The woman says she felt Shandro and his wife were in a conflict of interest and was frightened when the minister threatened to report her to protective services.
