Jan 25, 2023 | 4:25 PM

A man charged in a fatal central Alberta shooting two-and-a-half years ago has been sentenced to life behind bars.

Lyle Jamie Bearspaw, 29, of no fixed address, was sentenced in Red Deer Court of King’s Bench on Jan. 24, 2023, and also given a lifetime firearms prohibition after being convicted on one count of second-degree murder.

Bearspaw was charged in relation to a fatal shooting on the O’Chiese First Nation in 2020.

It was just after 8 p.m. on Aug. 27, 2020 when Rocky Mountain House RCMP received a 911 call about a firearms incident that had injured a male.

The victim, 23-year-old Troy Beaverbones, from O’Chiese First Nation, was airlifted by STARS, but later died in hospital.

Bearspaw was arrested later that night and charged with second-degree murder, in addition to counts of break and enter, fail to appear, and breach of probation.

He was previously scheduled for sentencing on June 2, 2022.
