Flu cases still trending upward in AHS Central Zone

Influenza cases and the number of hospitalizations, ICU admissions, and deaths due to the flu are continuing to rise in the Alberta Health Services (AHS) Central Zone.

According to Alberta Health, 994 cases of influenza have been confirmed in the Central Zone as of December 31, 2022, up by 117 cases since the last update Dec. 22, 2022.

Hospitalizations in the Central Zone due to the flu have risen to 191 over the past two weeks, up by 26 during that time.

Intensive Care Unit (ICU) admissions are now at 20, up from 17 two weeks ago, while the number of deaths related to the flu in the Central Zone is now 15, up from eight two weeks ago.

Elsewhere throughout the province, the Calgary Zone has 2,815 cases of influenza with 701 hospitalizations, 75 ICU admissions and 21 deaths.

The Edmonton Zone has 2,396 cases of influenza, 511 hospitalizations, 52 ICU admissions, and 18 flu-related deaths.

The North Zone currently has 1,499 cases of influenza, 230 hospitalizations, 22 ICU admissions, and eight deaths.

The South Zone has 617 cases of influenza as of Dec. 31, with 174 hospitalizations, 19 ICU admissions, and 15 flu-related deaths.
