Local AJHL players make an impact at 2022 World Junior A Challenge

A member of the Alberta Junior Hockey League’s (AJHL) Blackfalds Bulldogs as well as a fellow AJHL player from Red Deer, made their marks at the 2022 World Junior A Challenge that wrapped up in Cornwall, Ontario over the weekend.

The event which began on December 11, and concluded December 18, featured five teams, including Team Canada West, Team Canada East, the United States, Sweden, and Latvia.

Tanner Willick, a 2003-born defenceman for the Blackfalds Bulldogs on Team Canada West, played in six games during the tournament, notching a pair of assists in one of the games vs Latvia on Dec. 14.

Going into the tournament, the 5’9”, 157 pound native of Saskatoon, SK, had played 30 games for the Bulldogs so far this season, compiling three goals and 27 assists for a total of 30 points during that time.

Meanwhile, Red Deer native Ty Daneault, a 2004-born member of the Drumheller Dragons, was also on Team Canada West. The 5’11”, 175 pound forward also played six games during the tournament, amassing four goals and two assists for six points and 10 penalty minutes.

Daneault had one assist during a game against Team Canada East on Dec. 12, but later had a huge game on Dec. 14, when he earned four goals and one assist for five points in a game against Latvia en-route to a 10-0 victory.

Going into the tournament, Daneault had played 29 games for the Dragons so far this season, compiling 21 goals and 15 assist for 36 points during that time.

Team Canada West finished fourth at the 2022 World Junior A Challenge, falling 3-2 in a shootout to Sweden in the bronze medal game Sunday.

“You want to be playing for gold, but every one of our guys left it all out there today. It was great to see how our guys played and battled,” said Canada West assistant coach Clayton Jardine (Lacombe, Alta./Camrose, AJHL). “Cornwall did a great job of hosting the tournament. It is always an honor for a player or coach to represent the Maple Leaf.”

Canada East finished with the silver medal, losing 5-2 to the United States in the gold medal game Dec. 18.

Following the gold medal game, the tournament all-star team was announced:

F: Aiden Fink (Canada West)

F: Cole Knuble (United States)

F: Liam Watkins (Canada West)

D: Eric Pohlkamp (United States)

D: Tom Willander (Sweden)

G: Noah Erliden (Sweden)

Knuble was named the tournament’s most valuable player after recording three goals and nine points in six games.
