Rebels lose 4-1 to visiting Broncos

The Red Deer Rebels had a four-game win streak snapped Saturday night, losing 4-1 to the visiting Swift Current Broncos.

Coming in, Red Deer had won both games this season against Swift Current; Red Deer was sporting a record of 22-5-1-3 compared to the Broncos’ 13-15-0-1.

The Broncos were also coming off a big 8-4 win Friday in which Josh Filmon scored six times, while Red Deer was the 6-4 victor over Med Hat.

The two teams play again March 17 and 18, each in Red Deer.

Scoring summary

It took just 39 seconds for scoring to get started as Owen Pickering (5th) scored to make it 1-0.

Brady Birnie (5th) then made it 2-0 at 5:04 of the first.

Carson Birnie (5th) — Brady’s cousin — cut the lead to one just 1:42 later.

But Swift Current regained the two-goal lead before the first period was done, Luke Mistelbacher (4th) scoring at 10:07.

Red Deer had a five minute power play in the third with Josh Davies was given a major sentence for kneeing, but, down two goals, couldn’t convert.

Raphael Pelletier then scored into an empty net with 46 seconds left in regulation to seal the 4-1 win.

Between the pipes, Kyle Kelsey (13-4-1-3) stopped 22 of 25 shots faced for Red Deer, while Alexander Gage (8-5-0-1) made 30 saves on 31 shots faced for Swift Current.

Red Deer is now 22-6-1-3, atop the Central Division, and four points back of Winnipeg for first in the Eastern Conference, though also tied with Saskatoon at 48 points.

The Rebels are 6-2-1-1 in their last 10.
