Extreme Cold Warning issued for most of Alberta

Meteorologists with Environment and Climate Change Canada have issued Extreme Cold Warnings for most of Alberta, including for the Red Deer region.

The Extreme Cold Warning locally is in effect for:

• Camrose Co. near Bashaw and Meeting Creek
• City of Red Deer
• Co. of Paintearth near Halkirk and Big Knife Prov. Park
• Co. of Stettler near Big Valley
• Co. of Stettler near Botha and Gadsby
• Co. of Stettler near Byemoor and Endiang
• Co. of Stettler near Donalda
• Co. of Stettler near Stettler, Nevis and Rochon Sands
• Flagstaff Co. near Forestburg and Galahad
• Lacombe Co. near Clive, Alix and Mirror
• Lacombe Co. near Eckville
• Lacombe Co. near Lacombe, Blackfalds and Bentley
• Ponoka Co. near Ponoka and Maskwacis
• Red Deer Co. near Elnora, Lousana and Delburne
• Red Deer Co. near Penhold, Innisfail and Bowden
• Red Deer Co. near Pine Lake
• Red Deer Co. near Spruce View and Red Lodge Prov. Park
• Red Deer Co. near Sylvan Lake and Stephansson House

Extremely cold wind chill values near minus 40 are expected Thursday evening and overnight.

Officials say wind chill values are anticipated to moderate during the daylight hours on Friday. Extremely cold conditions may return Friday night, however, in a few regions.

Residents are reminded that extreme cold puts everyone at risk.

Risks are said to be greater for young children, older adults, people with chronic illnesses, people working or exercising outdoors, and those without proper shelter.

Residents are encouraged to watch for cold related symptoms: shortness of breath, chest pain, muscle pain and weakness, numbness and colour change in fingers and toes.

Residents are also reminded to dress warmly and dress in layers that you can remove if you get too warm. The outer layer should be wind resistant.

Also, if it’s too cold for you to stay outside, it’s too cold for your pet to stay outside, officials point out.

Environment Canada says extreme cold warnings are issued when very cold temperatures or wind chill creates an elevated risk to health such as frost bite and hypothermia.
