Cash 4 the Holidays charitable 50/50 returns

Dec 1, 2022 | 3:17 PM

The Kidney Foundation is offering you the chance to give your wallet a major boost.

“Inspired by the success of our summer 50/50 we are thrilled to announce The Kidney Foundation’s, Cash 4 the Holidays 50/50 is back. It is an incredible opportunity for anyone to win up to a half million dollars while supporting those impacted by kidney disease and organ donation in our community,” says Joyce Van Deurzen, Executive Director at The Kidney Foundation of Canada, Southern Alberta Branch. “We invite all our fellow Albertans who are 18 or older to kick off this exciting giving season with us and hurry to the website for their chance to win.”

Tickets go on sale for only one week starting this Thursday, December 1 and ending at midnight Thursday, December 8 with one lucky winner to be drawn on December 9, at 1pm in Calgary.

Officials say anyone can win cash just in time for the holidays if they have a ticket. You can play for as little as $5. Ticket options are 1 for $5, 60 for $20, 200 for $50, and 500 for $100.

Albertans are encouraged to imagine what you could do if you won.

“You could take your whole family on a warm vacation or pay off the mortgage… your dream awaits,” say Foundation officials.

You can get your Cash 4 the Holidays 50/50 tickets at Cash4theholidays.ca.

Albertans can also help by spreading the news because the more who play, the bigger the pot and impact will be for those who need it most. Officials say 100 per cent of the proceeds benefit The Kidney Foundation of Canada. The money raised is expected to help fund world-class Canadian researchers searching for a cure and programs and services supporting fellow Albertans living with kidney disease.

Each day, according to the Kidney Foundation, 15 Canadians learn their kidneys have failed, and they will need either dialysis or a kidney transplant to survive. Officials say there is no cure for kidney disease, as both dialysis and transplants are a form of life support. 78 per cent of all Canadians waiting for an organ transplant are waiting for a kidney, officials point out. Kidney disease is often referred to as a ‘silent killer’ because there can be few if any noticeable symptoms before significant damage has already occurred, say Foundation officials, noting that many people aren’t even aware they have kidney disease until life-saving treatment is necessary.

“That’s why it’s so important to raise funds and promote awareness and education in our community to actively prevent kidney disease for those most at risk. Kidney disease is not only devastating physically and emotionally; it also comes with a huge financial burden,” reads a statement from The Kidney Foundation. “Before the pandemic, requests for assistance were already greater than the funds available. The Kidney Foundation knows the need will only increase in the coming months.”

“Where we really need these funds going immediately is to help people who are in urgent need of last resort financial assistance, for example, people who may need help with the cost of travel to dialysis appointments or the cost of travel to Calgary for a life-saving transplant,” says Van Deurzen.
