After a 15 game record setting winning streak to start the season, the Red Deer Rebels now find themselves on a three game losing streak in the midst of a nine game road trip.

Despite their best efforts, the Rebels dropped a tight 3-2 shootout loss to the Wheat Kings in Brandon, MB on Friday with three more games still to go on the road.

The first period saw the Rebels provide the game’s first highlight when Kai Uchacz scored shorthanded at 5:32, his 16th of the season following a tripping penalty to teammate Frantisek Formanek. Craig Armstrong assisted on the play to make it 1-0 Red Deer.

That’s where the score stayed after 20 minutes with Red Deer outshooting Brandon 6-4.

The second period saw Red Deer native Nate Danielson tie it up for the Wheat Kings when he beat Rebels goaltender Kyle Kelsey at 5:39, his eighth of the season assisted by Quinn Mantei and Calder Anderson to make it 1-1.

Less than four minutes later, Brandon’s Andrei Malyavin scored his fourth goal of the season at 9:09 to make it 2-1 Wheat Kings with Jake Chiasson assisting on the play.

It remained 2-1 Brandon after 40 minutes with Red Deer outshooting the Wheat Kings 17-10 to that point.

The third period, however, brought more drama to the game when Red Deer’s Craig Armstrong put one past Brandon netminder Carson Bjarnason at 15:48 to tie it back up 2-2.

After 60 minutes, the game remained tied with Red Deer outshooting Brandon 26-15.

Neither team was able to score in the three-on-three overtime, with each team getting a pair of shots on net, sending the game to a shootout.

In the shootout, Brandon’s Brett Hyland went first and with a toe drag move, scored on Rebels goaltender Kyle Kelsey.

Red Deer’s Kai Uchacz shot next and also scored, high glove side on Carson Bjarnason, tying it back up.

Nolan Ritchie then scored for the Wheat Kings with a quick wrist shot to put Brandon up 2-1 in the shootout.

Then it was Jace Isley’s turn for Red Deer, but Carson Bjarnason was able to save his backhand attempt, giving the Wheat Kings an opportunity to put the game away on their next shot, in which they did, when Jake Chiasson lit the lamp to make it a 3-2 shootout final for Brandon.

Shots on goal, however, finished 28-17 in favour of Red Deer.

Wheat Kings netminder Carson Bjarnason earned the game’s third star for his efforts on the afternoon, with Red Deer’s Craig Armstrong named the game’s second star with one goal and one assist on the day. Brandon’s Andrei Malyavin with one goal during the game, received first star recognition.

The Rebels next game is Saturday, Nov. 12, 2022, 7:00 p.m. CST at the Brandt Centre in Regina, SK, against the Pats.
