After a 15-game winning streak to start the season, the Red Deer Rebels lost their first game 3-1 on Tuesday against the Winnipeg ICE at the Wayne Fleming Arena.

This season, the Rebels have beat a franchise record of a 14-game winning streak and a modern WHL record for holding the longest winning streak to start a season.

In the first period, multiple penalties were handed out for both teams but neither was able to capitalize. Red Deer and Winnipeg also each received a penalty at the buzzer, carrying over into the second period.

After 20 minutes of play, the ICE outshot the Rebels 7-5.

In the middle frame, Red Deer’s Arjun Bawa was sent to the box for delay of game. However, the ICE’s Ben Zloty took advantage of the power play opportunity, scoring his fifth goal of the season on Rebels goaltender Kyle Kelsey at 8:21. Assisted by Skyler Bruce and Conor Geekie, the scoreboard now read 1-0 for the home team.

At 13:50, Skyler Bruce scored his third goal of the season, with the help of Karter Prosofsky to make the score 2-0 ICE.

Winnipeg received a roughing penalty with one and a half minutes left in the period which carried over into the third.

By the end of the second, Winnipeg outshot the Rebels 10-7 for a two-period total of 17-12 to that point.

In the final period, with one man down, the ICE’s Matthew Savoie scored his sixth goal of the season within the first 13 seconds. Zach Benson claimed the assist to bring the team to a 3-0 lead.

The Rebels brought some hope back to their fans at 12:52 when Kai Uchacz took a shot on netminder Daniel Hauser. Off the rebound, Carson Birnie netted his second goal of the season from the crease. The game now stood at 3-1, in favour of the ICE.

Winnipeg still outshot Red Deer in the third period 12-9 and 29-21 overall.

The Rebels went 0/6 on the power play while the ICE went 1/7.

The ICE won all three stars of the game with Ben Zloty earning the third star for scoring the first goal of the evening. Skyler Bruce received the second star for his two points of one goal, one assist. Matthew Savoie was given the first star for his shorthanded final goal of the game.

The Rebels have another chance at redemption against the ICE on Wednesday evening at 7:05 p.m. at the Wayne Fleming Arena.
