Red Deer Polytechnic Athletes of the Week

Oct 25, 2022 | 2:24 PM

Red Deer Polytechnic Athletics is proud to announce the Fas Gas RDP Athletes of the Week:

1. Amy Szymanek Hometown – Stauffer, Alberta – Bachelor of Education Middle School (4th year)

After finishing off with double-doubles in the opening weekend of basketball in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference, fourth-year guard Amy Szymanek is named the Queens Player of the Week.

In the home opener on Friday, October 21, Szymanek came off the bench and dropped 11 points and picked up 11 rebounds. Also, she would grab two assists and two steals. Szymanek was named the Queens Player of the Game for her rebounding and scoring abilities coming off the bench.

The following day in Calgary, Szymanek started the game and improved on the night before by dropping 22 points with a 71.4 field-goal percentage. She was named player of the game for the second night in a row and finished off the night playing 36 minutes.

2. Eduardo Crespo Hometown – Mococa, Sao Paulo, Brazil Academic Upgrading (2nd year)

For his performance on the pitch as well as the hard court this past weekend, second-year striker and forward Eduardo Crespo is named the Kings Player of the Week.

On Saturday, Crespo was a busy student athlete with a soccer game in Red Deer at 2 pm and a basketball game in Calgary at 8 pm. When the Kings played the Olds College Broncos in the final regular season soccer game, Crespo was a crucial player in the team’s 3-3 draw. He picked up the assist on the first goal but when the Kings went down 3-1, it was Crespo who took the team on his shoulders. He picked up two more assists on the final two goals in the last eight minutes of the match to come away with an all-important draw against the Broncos. This draw gave the Kings home field advantage in the play-in game.

After this game finished, Crespo immediately drove off to Calgary to take part in the Kings game against the St. Mary’s University Lightning where he was a part of the starting five. He was not awarded a player of the game in this match, but he did finish off with 12 points, six rebounds and three assists. It was his leadership and playing ability that kept the Kings in it against the Lightning in the fourth quarter.
