WEEK #6

Football Alberta high school football rankings

Oct 12, 2022 | 3:10 PM

Football Alberta has released its Weekly Top-10 Rankings for all four Tiers of 12-man high school football in the province and the 6-man rankings as well for the 2022 season.

These rankings will come out every week until November 7. At that time, those will be the last rankings and teams will take that rank into Provincials.

The teams are slotted into Tiers based on their estimated school size over a three-year average by the Alberta Schools’ Athletic Association. Please note that games vs. US opponents, scrimmages, or tournaments are not taken into consideration for ranking or listed in the overall record of the schools.

GAME(S) OF THE WEEK:

THREE TIER SPECTACULARS

Tier I

#4 Ernest Manning Griffins vs. #6 St. Francis Browns

5:00 p.m., Thursday, October 13, Hellard Field at Shouldice Park (Calgary)

Yes, another Div. I game out of Calgary for the second week in a row, but this one is very interesting. For the last decade it’s seemingly been all St. Francis and Notre Dame in Canada’s toughest high school division. Henry Wise Wood has chimed in from time to time but the two big Catholic High Schools in northwest Calgary have been the big dogs for quite some time. Now here comes the Ernest Manning Griffins, who when you consider overall records – including exhibition play – are Calgary’s only undefeated Division I team to date. The next two weeks will tell a significant tale as they get the traditional powers back-to-back starting with St. Francis. The Browns are sitting at .500 in mid-October, which is a rare thing indeed and can’t sit well with them. A lot will be learned on Thursday.

Tier II

#1 Holy Trinity Academy Knights at #4 Cardston Cougars

6:00 p.m., Friday, October 14, Walker Field (Cardston)

As an independent team, the search for quality games is a tough grind each year, yet the Holy Trinity Academy Knights always seem to find them. They are definitely in the discussion for who could be the “Unicorn” team this year as possibly the best team in any Tier, and their record shows that for now. Playing the Cougars is never an easy task but it’s even harder when you go to Cardston. A terrific high school football atmosphere awaits the Knights at the foot of the Rockies. This game potentially could be a preview of the first round Provincial Tier II game between Region’s 1 and 2 in four weeks’ time but for now its must-see in Southern Alberta next Friday.

Tier III

#4 Sylvan Lake Lakers at #2 Stettler Wildcats

7:30 p.m., Thursday, October 13, William E. Hay High School (Stettler)

Having both played in the Rural Division of the Central Alberta League for the past decade, these teams did quite well and always had entertaining games against each other. They never had to worry about playing the big Tier I and II teams from Red Deer and Lacombe in the City Division and could prepare for Provincials accordingly. Now with the Rural Division on hiatus as the other four rural Central Alberta teams play 9-a-side, still recovering from the pandemic disruption, both the Lakers and Wildcats were entered into the City Division. Not only are they competitive but they are a collective 8-1 against the much larger opposition so far. And now they face off against each other in a game that will give us a hint as to who will be the Tier III rep out of the Central in Provincials. Under the lights on a crisp fall night in Stettler – no finer place to be this Thursday.
