The final $5.64 million of an $18.4 million investment by the Government of Alberta will finally bring the Sylvan Lake Regional Water/Wastewater System to completion.

The money has come from the province’s Water for Life grant, notes a release from the Sylvan Lake Regional Water/Wastewater Commission.

The funding, which is given on a 90:10 basis, will allow the Town of Eckville, the Summer Village of Half Moon Bay, and portions of Lacombe County to come online to a regional wastewater system first envisioned more than two decades ago.

The project’s total cost is just north of $20 million, with the nine commission members splitting the 10 per cent.

“On behalf of the Sylvan Lake Regional Water/Wastewater Commission and our member municipalities, I want to sincerely thank Minister [Devin] Dreeshen, Minister [Jason] Nixon, and the Government of Alberta for their commitment to this project and for providing the Water for Life funding needed to complete the regional system,” said Commission Chair Mike Pashak.

“This investment delivers lasting benefits for the entire region. It provides an affordable wastewater solution for our communities, protects our drinking water sources, supports future growth, and completes the regional vision that municipalities and the province began more than two decades ago. This is a tremendous win for central Alberta.”

Other members of the commission already connected include the Summer Village of Norglenwold, Red Deer County, Summer Village of Sunbreaker Cove, Summer Village of Birchcliff, Summer Village of Jarvis Bay, and the Town of Sylvan Lake.

Detailed design and construction will now proceed, with the regional system expected to be fully operational in late 2027.
