Queens soccer tied for first place

RDP cross country running and soccer weekend recap

The Red Deer Polytechnic (RDP) Kings and Queens made this weekend worth-while in cross country running and soccer competitions.

At Grand Prix #3, the Kings Cross Country Running team earned first place while the Queens captured third. The Queens Soccer team picked up a pair of road wins and moved into a tie for first place in the south with the SAIT Trojans. The Kings Soccer squad drew even with the Olds College Broncos and SAIT Trojans.

Held at Concordia University of Edmonton, Kings cross country runner Daniel Szucs finished with a time of 27:49 at the Grand Prix #3. From Lacombe, he also completed fourth among Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) male competitors over 8 km. Jenica Swartz led the Queens over 6 km with 24:09, capturing second among ACAC female runners.

In soccer, the Queens defeated the Broncos 4-2 at Olds College on October 1. Stettler’s Alisha Coules and Japan’s Sein Furuyama scored two goals each for the Polytechnic. Queens goalkeeper Abby Kotyk made four saves and Kayla Yeo, a Practical Nurse Diploma student, was named the RDP Queens Player of the Game.

That same day at the College, the Kings received a goal from first-year striker Ashton Chipman in the 85th minute, tying the Broncos 1-1 on the road. Kings Player of the Game was second-year Kinesiology Fitness and Health student Jared St. Thomas who turned aside nine shots in the net.

On October 2, the Queens (6-1-0) downed the SAIT Trojans (6-1-0) by a score of 2-1 in Calgary. The two teams now share first place in the south. Furuyama and Grace Smith recorded goals for the Polytechnic with Furuyama continuing to lead the league with 19 goals.

Also on Sunday at SAIT, the third seed Kings (2-1-3) picked up a 1-1 tie against the first place SAIT Trojans (5-0-1). Captain Ajdin Sarcevic scored for the Polytechnic while St. Thomas made eight saves.
