Olds College Broncos return home this Saturday to face Ambrose Lions

Sep 23, 2022 | 5:16 PM

After a weekend on the road, the Olds College Broncos men’s and women’s soccer teams are back on home turf this Saturday against Calgary’s Ambrose University Lions.

Kickoff times at Richardson Pioneer Field (1351 Township Road 331A, Olds) on September 24 are set for noon for the women’s game, followed by the men’s kickoff at 2 p.m.

Women’s Soccer

The women’s soccer Broncos (1-1-1) say they will be looking to build on the momentum they gained following a recent road trip in which they picked up four of possible six points with a 1-1 draw in Lethbridge and a 3-1 win in Medicine Hat.

Tiona Paton supplied the entirety of the Broncos’ scoring punch for the weekend, which earned her ACAC Female Athlete of the Week honours. The second-year forward out of Morinville worked with rookie midfielder Mirtalem Vriend to form what the team calls “a dynamic attacking punch” driven by speed.

Broncos head coach Allan Siwela also says he was particularly impressed with keeper Kaia Galuska in her last outing, in which the Lake Country, B.C. native picked up Player of the Game honours in Medicine Hat.

They return home to welcome an Ambrose squad still in search of its first goal and win of the season. The Lions (0-4-0) will need to rebound from a 16-0 loss at the hands of the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens in their last outing on Sept. 17.

Men’s Soccer

The men’s soccer Broncos (0-1-2) are still in search of their first win of the campaign after a pair of 2-2 draws against Lethbridge College and Medicine Hat College, both of which came after the Broncos made second-half comebacks.

After Garren Oosterhuis got the Broncos on the board, keeper Joao Batista was able to make key contributions at both ends of the pitch on Sept. 17 in Lethbridge, scoring the game-tying goal from his own side of the half just before time was added to get a result for the Broncos.

Meanwhile, it was captain Valentin Kirchner who produced a point for Olds College in Medicine Hat with a goal off a penalty in the 55th minute, then finding the back of the net again seven minutes later.

The team says they thought they had the potential match winner in the 89th minute, but the play was deemed to be slightly offside.

The men’s team from Ambrose University (0-2-0) is also searching for its first win of the season, with their most recent match being a 4-0 setback to the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings on Sept. 17.
