Oriole Park students win $1,150 grand prize from Canadian Geographic Classroom Challenge
The students of Oriole Park Elementary School earned a grand prize of $1,150 on Friday from the Canadian Geographic Queen’s Jubilee Classroom Challenge for their community garden efforts.
On September 23, students and teachers gathered at the Capstone Common Ground Garden Project (45 St.) to accept the cheque, surrounded by picked vegetables of squash, beets, and carrots.
In the spring, then-Grade 4 teacher Melanie Beebe, says she was inspired to create a school project for students in celebration of the 2022 Year of the Garden.
She says it was Sylvia Kennedy, retired teacher and educational lead for ReThink Red Deer, a local group focused on sustainable living, who invited her class to work on the Common Ground Garden Project. The project aims to create a year-round movable community garden to produce food for the people of Red Deer.
