Local Mounties respond to alleged online threats

Red Deer City RCMP and local school officials are reminding the community that online threats are taken very seriously.

The reminder comes through a note to parents at Lindsay Thurber Comprehensive High School this week after local Mounties knocked on the doors of two homes at 10:00 p.m. on Sept. 19, where police were investigating two youth allegedly involved in potential online threats connected to the school.

In this day and age, these threats are taken extremely seriously by police, school officials, as well as youth who quickly report these to police, as was the case in this situation, say school officials.

It was determined that the threat was not real, but it was treated and responded to as genuine.

“We want to reiterate how dangerous these types of threats are, even if they’re meant as a joke,” said Cpl. Mike Evans, Red Deer RCMP Community Policing. “We take them very seriously and investigate thoroughly as they can have a very negative impact to our community’s feeling of safety and mental wellbeing.”

What might be seen as just a joke or a prank, following up on social media challenges, and no big deal, can deeply impact the safety and mental wellness of all those involved, say school officials. It is also said to conjure up memories of real situations that have taken place.

In addition, it requires significant time and resources for RCMP and school officials. That is why schools and police fully pursue these to the fullest extent possible, including suspensions, expulsions and/or criminal charges, add officials.

“These situations are serious and we encourage anyone aware of possible threats to report them to police and/or school officials immediately,” reads the letter to parents.
