You’ll believe a man can walk! Later this month, Team Jigger founder and accessibility advocate Jason “Jigger” Lunn will leave the confines of his motorized wheelchair and walk the length of a football field!

In partnership with the Lacombe Athletic Park Association, the Strides 4 AccessAbility event will highlight the incredible moment when Jason, utilizing some highly specialized equipment, will attempt to walk the full 100 yards of the ME Global Athletic Park football field following the Lacombe Rams Home Game Friday, September 16, 2022.

Though walking the length of a football field may not seem like such a feat, for a quadriplegic, it could feel nearly impossible.

“Having watched Jigger’s recovery from day one has been nothing short of astonishing” says Team Jigger Board Director Darcy Stingel, “His determination, hard work, optimism and attitude have carried him through some tough days, and to see how far he’s come is truly amazing.”

Diagnosed as a quadriplegic following a 2011 motor vehicle collision, Jason has constantly strived to improve his abilities and remove barriers in his day-to-day life, say organizers. In the decade following his life-altering incident, Jason has since returned to work, can drive himself in a modified vehicle and is still highly active as a volunteer in the community.

Attendees of the Lacombe Rams football game will be able to watch this incredible feat following the game and learn more about the man and the mission behind the Team Jigger Foundation. Having practiced for weeks now, officials say Jason is confident he will be able to walk the distance, yard by yard.

“It’s important to show our community, our young athletes, what determination and will power can accomplish” says Lunn, who maintains his football connections and involvement by sitting on the Lacombe Athletic Park Association Board.

The Team Jigger Foundation was asked by the ME Global Athletic Park to consult on accessibility during the park’s most recent renovation and expansion.

“We’re thrilled to be able to showcase the many accessible features that were incorporated into the park.” says Lunn, who is now able to access the upper floors and observation areas. “Beyond the accessibility incorporated into this renovation, the Team Jigger Foundation is proud to contribute to new, accessible recreational opportunities in our community” adds Lunn, referring to the recent Sledge Hockey Program launched last winter.

“Specialized therapy equipment and support for everyBODY is one aspect of the foundation, but advocating for accessibility and inclusion is just as important” adds Stingel, who encourages everyone who is able to take in the event. “To watch Jigger walk upright again is going to be a joyous, emotional and inspirational occasion.”

Anyone wishing to donate to the Team Jigger Foundation can do so via www.teamjigger.com.

“We’ll be accepting in-person donations at the event as well,” says Lunn, who hopes to reach as many people as possible.
