Man sentenced in armed robbery incidents

Aug 24, 2022 | 11:07 AM

A man accused of multiple armed robberies and other firearms offences in Maskwacis earlier this year has been sentenced to six months (180 days) in jail and given a 10-year firearms prohibition.

Wyatt Omeasoo, 24, of the Ermineskin Cree Nation, was sentenced in Wetaskiwin provincial court on Aug. 23, 2022, after being convicted on counts of pointing a firearm, carrying a concealed weapon, and resisting a peace officer. Seven other counts against Omeasoo were withdrawn.

It was about 11 a.m. on March 24, 2022 when members of Maskwacis RCMP were dispatched to a complaint of an armed robbery at the Samson Townsite.

At the time, police said they were told the driver of a vehicle was robbed at gunpoint, and his wallet was stolen.

The suspect fled before officers arrived, but a description was provided to police.

While investigating that robbery, police were sent to a local shopping centre for a second armed robbery where a cell phone was allegedly stolen.

Another description, matching the first one, was given to police.

Police then made patrols in the area, locating the suspect, who attempted to flee on foot. Shortly thereafter, police took the suspect into custody, and recovered a firearm.

Police say no one was harmed in either incident.
