RDP announces David A. Robertson to deliver speech in Perspectives Speaker Series

Oct 21, 2026 | 3:46 PM

Red Deer Polytechnic is set to host Author David A. Robertson as part of its Perspectives: Canada in the World annual speaker series.

On Oct. 28 at 7 p.m., Robertson will be the featured speaker at the Welikoklad Theatre Mainstage within the RDP Arts Centre.

“We are honoured to welcome David A. Robertson to RDP as part of our Perspectives Speaker Series,” says Dr. Robbie Halonen, Dean, School of Arts and Education, Red Deer Polytechnic. “Engaging with authors who bring forward Indigenous voices and experiences helps our community broaden its understanding, reflect on its responsibilities and strengthen its commitment to reconciliation. Opportunities like this encourage learners to think critically, listen openly and engage in meaningful conversation.”

Robertson has published over 30 books on several different topics and genres such as children’s literature, graphic novels, memoirs and young adult fiction focusing on Indigenous culture and history.

He graduated from the University of Winnipeg in 1999 with a bachelor of arts degree and went on to write professionally in 2008.

It wasn’t until 2014 when Robertson published his first novel called The Evolution of Alice, which explores the life of Alice, who is a single mother raising three daughters on the reservation.

Along the way, Robertson has been awarded many accolades, including the Governor General’s Literary Award, TD Canadian Children’s Literature Award, Writers’ Union of Canada Freedom to Read Award and the Globe and Mail Children’s Storyteller of the Year.

RDP says Robertson is also a public speaker, podcaster and advocate whose work consistently amplifies conversations about Indigenous culture, mental health and social justice.

“Drawing from his own experiences, David A. Robertson offers a clear and compelling look at how censorship operates, why it emerges and who is most affected by it,” RDP stated in a release. “Through real-world examples and thoughtful reflection, he illustrates the consequences of restricting access to stories and highlights what individuals and communities can do to defend the freedom to read.”

Past speakers of Perspectives at RDP have included notable Canadians, including astronaut Chris Hadfield, author Margaret Atwood and journalist Andrew Coyne.

Proceeds from Perspectives: Canada in the World support future Perspectives events and scholarship funds for RDP students, helping to sustain the series’ legacy of intellectual engagement and community enrichment.
