Notice of Motion

Councillor Lawrence Lee puts out call for better telecommunication services in Red Deer

Councillor Lawrence Lee put out a call for better telecommunication services in Red Deer at council’s latest meeting on Monday.

While not a resident himself of an area with poor service, he said he was taken aback by how many Red Deerians were being affected.

“You really can’t believe that in our day and age and for a city of our size to have that type of infrastructure deficit doesn’t make sense,” he said.

Councillor Lee read his notice of motion to council that neighborhoods in the northeast of the city have not had adequate telecommunication services for over a decade which, he says, is a necessity, especially in accessing emergency services.

He says in his motion that it is a vital community infrastructure comparable to roads and other utilities.

He suggests that next steps should include council reaching out to telecommunication providers and to consider a more efficient process when planning for new future neighbourhoods.

“It came to the point where there were promises and timelines that were in place for service to be provided to that area of Red Deer and those just kept getting pushed back or pushed off and certainly there’s a lot of reasons why. We just want to find out what those impediments are and work with those providers to ensure we get the services those residents need,” he said.

Council is scheduled to consider the motion in an open debate at their next meeting on August 29 after having each conducted their own research such as speaking to their constituents and reflecting on the matter further.
