Rimbey couple win Red Deer Hospital Lottery dream home

From Red Deer Regional Hospital on Thursday, the Red Deer Regional Health Foundation announced Jim and Tracy Devries of Rimbey as winners of the Hospital Lottery dream home valued at $890,000.

Tracy says she and her husband started purchasing tickets for the lottery years ago after her mother became ill with kidney failure and needed to start dialysis.

“She received amazing care from Dr. Kym Jim and Dr. Edward Lee as well as Crystal and PD (peritoneal dialysis) staff. It was second to none and we are grateful for everything they continue to do for her,” she said.

This year’s 2,994 square foot home, built by Sorento Custom Homes, is at 145 Emerald Drive in Red Deer’s new Evergreen neighbourhood. The home features three large bedrooms, 2.5 baths and a large flex room downstairs. It contains a shower room, an office, a large sundeck off the dining room, and a five-piece ensuite connecting to a walk-in closet and laundry room.

The winning package also includes home furnishings from Urban Barn and $10,000 in cash.

Both in their 50s with Tracy in the healthcare industry and Jim working in the oilfield, the winners say they are very thankful for the prize.

“We have not viewed the home yet but plan to soon. We have no immediate plans as of yet; we have a lot to think about,” said Tracy.

Officials also announced Audrey Daines of Innisfail as the winner of the 2022 GMC Yukon SLT vehicle, valued at $81,987, and Richard Peart of Red Deer as the winner of the Mega Bucks 50, valued at $332,000.

“It’s been an amazing year for us,” said Manon Therriault, CEO, Red Deer Regional Heatlh Foundation.

“We really do appreciate the support that we’ve received from our community. Home lotteries, and lotteries in general, in Alberta have been down over the last two years, but we’ve still seen some exceptional support in order to fund almost every single piece of equipment that we have strived for.”

Although Therriault says the fundraising total will be tallied by the end of July, the Foundation says they were able to secure enough funding for 72 of 83 needed pieces of equipment, with several hospital units benefiting. The items’ estimated value is $600,000. Equipment includes stretchers, beds, bladder scanners, ENT (ear, nose, and throat) navigation systems, and ultrasounds, among others.

Plans are already in the works for next year, she adds.

“Our relationship with Sorrento Custom Homes is incredible. They always listen to what we have to say and what our community has to say about their homes, and they offer a really great product that we can raffle off,” she said, describing the home as livable and a place where people would want to raise their families.

Winners of the other 120 prizes, valued at over $1.1 million, will be fully announced by July 4. All winners, including early birds, can be found on the Lottery website.

Since 1994, the Red Deer Regional Health Foundation has been the main fundraising organization for the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre and other health care centres throughout Alberta Health Services’ Central Zone.
