May 30, 2022 | 11:53 AM

After a two-year hiatus, Special Olympics Red Deer will once again be hosting its Celebrity Breakfast on Wednesday, June 15.

Organizers say this is the 14th time the event has been held to raise funds in support of the 300 athletes with intellectual disabilities who take part in the programs 13 sports.

This year’s speakers will be Olympic speed skater Maddison Pearman and Red Deer athlete Thomasina Payne.

Pearman, a 26-year-old long track speed skater originally from Ponoka, made her Olympic debut at Beijing 2022 where she competed in the 1000m and 1500m.

Payne, meanwhile, is a multi-sport athlete competing in curling, speedskating and athletics. She was named Special Olympics Canada’s Female Athlete of the Year in 2021.

Special Olympics is a non-profit organization providing sport and social opportunities for individuals who have an intellectual disability.

Officials say funds raised at the Celebrity Breakfast will be used to cover uniform and equipment, facility, transportation, accommodation, volunteer training and administration costs of the affiliate.
