Rebels ready for busy draft week

It’s a busy week for the Red Deer Rebels as the club continues to build for the future through a pair of upcoming drafts.

On Wednesday, May 18, 2022, the Rebels will take part in the 2022 WHL U.S. Priority Draft. The Rebels own the 14th and 31st overall selections in the two-round draft.

At the 2021 WHL U.S. Priority Draft on December 8, 2021, the Rebels selected defenceman and California native Quentin Bourne with the eighth overall pick. Bourne has since signed a WHL Standard Player Agreement with the club. The Rebels also selected Texas forward Jonah Jasser 37th overall.

Elsewhere, team officials say the Rebels currently own the 17th overall selection in the first round of Thursday’s 2022 WHL Prospects Draft. The club also has picks in round two (39th overall), four (83rd), five (105th), six (127th), seven (148th) and eight (191st). The Rebels also have picks in rounds nine, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14 and 15. Four players selected by the Rebels at the 2021 WHL Prospects Draft on December 9, 2021, have since signed with the club, including forward Ollie Josephson (first round, fifth overall) and goaltender Chase Wutzke (second round, 40th overall) who each made their WHL debuts with the Rebels during the 2021-22 season. The Rebels have also signed defenceman Zane Saab (round two, 47th overall) and forward Evan Smith (round five, 95th overall) from their 2021 draft class.

Players eligible for the 2022 WHL U.S. Priority Draft are 2007-born players who reside in Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Kansas, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming. Players not selected in the 2022 WHL U.S. Priority Draft will remain eligible to be selected in the 2022 WHL Prospects Draft on Thursday, May 19, or listed by a WHL Club at any time thereafter.

Players eligible for the 2022 WHL Prospects Draft are 2007-born players who reside in Alberta, B.C., Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Northwest Territories, Yukon, Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Kansas, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Washington and Wyoming.
