Trial underway for central Alberta man charged in alleged kidnapping and beating

May 9, 2022 | 11:50 AM

Trial is underway in Wetaskiwin Court of Queen’s Bench for a man from the Louis Bull First Nation accused of abducting and beating a woman from the Cree Nation community of Pigeon Lake.

Lionel Richard Twins, 61, is scheduled for trial from May 9-13, 2022.

Twins is charged with attempted murder, kidnapping without a firearm, aggravated assault, flight from police, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, resisting arrest, and two counts of assault in the January 2021 incident.

According to Maskwacis RCMP, it began around 11:00 p.m. on Jan. 19, 2021 when officers were called to Pigeon Lake after learning an adult female had been abducted from a residence.

Police searched throughout the night for the suspect vehicle, and in the early morning hours, were dispatched to a commercial business after a witness located a female with life-threatening injuries.

Mounties and EMS responded immediately and confirmed the woman was the abducted victim from earlier in the evening. She was taken to a local area hospital for treatment, in serious condition.

RCMP located and stopped the suspect vehicle around 8:00 a.m. on Jan. 20, but the suspect is said to have fled into a wooded area. He was apprehended, however, after a brief foot chase.
