Game 2 OT goal gives Wheaties series tie against Rebels

Apr 23, 2022 | 10:15 PM

Game 2 between the Red Deer Rebels and Brandon Wheat Kings was a much different story than in Game 1 when the team with home-ice advantage put a licking on their opponent 5-0.

On Saturday, in front of fans at the Centrium, Brandon kept things a lot closer, ultimately winning 2-1 in overtime.

How did they get there…

In the first period, Red Deer had one power play and the Wheaties had two, but there was nothing doing, and it was knotted at zero after 20 minutes.

In the second, more penalties put Red Deer down a man twice, and Brandon once, but still neither team could capitalize, that is until late in the frame.

At 17:12, Red Deer native Nate Danielson (1st) scored his first career WHL post-season goal, breaking the deadlock for a 1-0 lead headed to the third.

In the final frame of regulation, Red Deer received a gift early.

At 4:18, Kai Uchacz was awarded a penalty shot, but was stopped by Ethan Kruger.

However, just 12 seconds later, the Rebels would equalize, Frantisek Formanek (1st) — the right-winger from Czechia who scored three times in the regular season — making it 1-1. Hunter Mayo and Uchacz got the assists.

There was otherwise just one power play in the period, for Brandon, with Ben King in the box just 1:15 in.

The Rebels outshot Brandon 36-27 through 60 minutes, and the game headed to sudden-death 20-minute overtime.

In the first overtime period, Brandon’s Riley Ginnell (1st) notched the game-winner at 7:16 to steal home-ice advantage, and knot the series at one game apiece headed to Game 3 on April 26.

Chase Coward stopped 28/30 shots on the night, and Kruger made 37 saves on 38 shots in the victory, his first in the WHL playoffs.

Kruger was named first star, Ben King earned second star honours, and Ginnell, he of the game-winning goal, was given the nod for third star.
