For the first time in six years, the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens hockey team are ACAC champions.

Dylan Norrie scored the lone goal and game-winner at 5:48 of the third period, unassisted, on Friday night from the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre, in what was game three of a best-of-five series RDP already led 2-0 over the Olds Broncos.

The sweep of the Broncos, who themselves reached the final unpredictably, gives the Queens their fourth ACAC gold medal overall.

Tanya Disotell-Dunsmore also stopped 14 shots in the shutout, after Madison Fox shut out the Broncos 4-0 in game two on March 20. The Queens had taken game one by a score of 2-1 on March 18, Disotell-Dunsmore getting the victory that night.

By virtue of their 11-2-2 record, the Queens earned a bye into the ACAC championship series, while Olds College (6-8-1) played a best-of-three series against the NAIT Ooks (11-4-0). Olds would win the series 2-1 on March 13, advancing to face RDP.

The title marks the end of the Queens’ season as there is no national championship.
